With the BS6 emission norms coming into force from April 2020, car makers are in preparation mode to embrace this change. While carmakers like Maruti Suzuki have taken a standing saying that low capacity diesel engines will not find a place in the company's portfolio, the second biggest carmaker in the country, Hyundai Motor India, has said that it will continue to bring diesel cars to India. Speaking to carandbike, S. S. Kim, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India said, "Hyundai Motor India will continue to bring diesel cars to India. The cars coming will meet BS6 norms."

The company currently sells the Grand i10, Xcent, Venue, i20, Verna, Creta and even the Elantra with the diesel motor. It therefore has a range of diesel powertrains on offer. There's the 1.2-litre CRDi, the 1.4-litre CRDi, the 1.6-litre CRDi in its line-up and if all these engines will in fact make the transition to BS6, expect cars to be more expensive by Rs. 1 lakh atleast. While many carmakers indicated that some of the cars in its current portfolio will not make the transition to BS6, Hyundai India has told carandbike that all the models from its current portfolio (both petrol and diesel variants) will make the transition

The Hyundai Creta comes with the 1.6-litre diesel which belts out 126 bhp
The company has also said that the cars that are in the pipeline for the Indian market, will meet the BS6 emission norms. However, Kia is all set to bring the SP2i based compact SUV to the Indian market which will in fact rival the Creta. Now, this SUV will be powered by a 1.5-litre diesel unit. It remains to be seen, whether it'll be this very 1.5-litre diesel that will make its way under the hood of Hyundai's product portfolio in the country or is there another strategy at play.
