Dell’Orto Is Preparing for the EV Future

Dell’Orto and Energica have entered a partnership to develop and produce a new power unit for electric vehicles. Those electric vehicles are ones on the smaller side. Small and medium electric motorcycles are their target, according to the press release.

A lot of people have heard the Dell’Orto name. I’m familiar with it because the company makes little carburetors, and I’ve installed a few on various classic mopeds. The company also makes fuel injection equipment and other automotive and motorcycle-related products. With electric vehicles becoming the future, Dell’Orto is rightfully looking for a way to stay relevant. The partnership with Energica is a way to do that.

Energica is well-known for its electric motorcycles, Moto-E, and more. The company is a force to be reckoned with in the electric motorcycle segment. It may seem that Energica has the upper hand here in terms of knowledge, but the companies will be working on a 50% revenue-sharing model, so it’s safe to assume that both companies see this as a mutually beneficial endeavor.

A Smart Move for Expansion

Davide Dell’Orto, CTO Dell’Orto, and Livia Cevolini, CEO of Energica Motor Company, both issued statements about the partnership. Both said they see this as a way to expand their businesses. I think that’s an accurate statement. Dell’Orto said:

This challenge well represents the continuous will of Dell’Orto to innovate not only in its core sector of internal combustion engines, but also in the field of urban sustainable mobility that we consider to be one of the fastest growing sectors for the future electric traction.

Cevolini of Enrgicia said the following about the partnership:

Thanks to the know-how acquired and recognized internationally, Energica aims to start the development of this motorization, expanding our offer with a large volumes segment with high potential growth in the world. Our teams are already working on new solutions to meet the new market demands

This appears to be a very smart move by both companies. They both do what they do very well, and the two of them teaming up makes a lot of sense, honestly. I wouldn’t have picked Dell’Orto and Energica off the top of my head, but I get it. I’m excited to see where this leads.
