The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has proposed to set-up a South Asian Automotive Forum in order to strengthen business ties. SIAM has proposed industry association and government representatives from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka establish the forum to further widen and deepen the relationship between the automotive industries in each country. The apex national body for all major vehicle manufacturers in India proposed this during the first meeting held between the associations of all five nations. This includes the Bangladesh Automobiles Assemblers & Manufacturers Association (BAAMA), Automobiles Association of Nepal (NADA), Myanmar Automobile Manufacturers and Distributors Association (MAMDA) and Ceylon Motor Traders Association (CMTA).
Speaking about the proposal, Rakesh Sharma, Chairman – SIAM Exports Group and Executive Director, Bajaj Auto said, "A large share of our automobile exports, about 16 per cent amounting to USD $1.8 billion (about Rs. 12,890 crore) pa, goes to these South Asian countries. Hence, it is important that a forum for discussions be established to ensure sustained and mutually beneficial growth. Several Indian automobile and auto component manufacturing companies have already established factories for manufacturing assembly in these markets. Now the aim is to build a closer engagement within the South Asian Automotive fraternity to support the development of an efficient value chain and serve the large customer base whilst meeting the objectives of the respective governments."
SIAM has a multi-pronged four-point proposal that emphasises on the exchange of views and information on several topics. This includes mutual interests of all organisations, organising joint conferences, seminars and trade shows. The forum will also organise business meetings between manufacturers as well as manufacturers and suppliers. It will also organise delegation visits to manufacturing facilities, testing facilities and scrappage facilities. The
Furthermore, the proposed forum will help the participants shape automotive policies in the areas of homologation, scrappage, road safey and other areas of mobility. The organisations could also look into sharing infrastructure in the future, according to SIAM.
