As the new BS6 emission norms will come into effect from April 1, 2020, the Indian dealers across the country are left with a limited period of time to sell off the remaining BS4 stocks. However, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has disabled the Vahan portal for the dealers throughout the country. MoRTH took this step as per the instructions received from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), wherein they disabled the portal for vehicle registration. The Federation of Automobile Dealers' Associations (FADA) highlighted the same by urging Nitin Gadkari, union minister, Road Transport and Highways, to intervene and address the issue.

FADA urged Nitin Gadkari to address the issue
For starters, Vahan is an online vehicle registration application used by the dealers. FADA took to Twitter to highlight the issue faced by the dealers. The apex dealers' body also mentioned that the Indian dealers will have to face huge losses over thousands of crore if the portal remains inaccessible. The dealers use Vahan portal for entering the details of the sold vehicles as well as for online payment.
The association also mentioned that the dealers are working from home amid lockdown across the country because of Coronavirus Pandemic. The body also added that they despite all these restrictions, the dealers are following all the guidelines issued by MHA.
The Honourable Supreme Court on March 27 extended the March 31 deadline for selling BS4 vehicles in the country. The judgement brought a partial relief for the manufacturers as well as the dealers wherein they are allowed to sell only 10 per cent of unsold within 10 days after the lockdown is lifted. The dealers and manufacturers will not be able to sell or register BS4 vehicles in Delhi-NCR region as per the decision from SC. Additionally, the apex court also stated that the BS4 vehicles sold before the lockdown should be registered within 10 days. According to FADA, there are a total of 7 lakh units of unsold BS4 two-wheelers along with 12,000 BS4 passenger car units and 7,000 BS4 commercial vehicles units. The dealerships across India have a combined total of unsold BS4 vehicles worth Rs. 6,400 crore.
