Piaggio has unveiled the Vespa Elettrica electric scooter at the Auto Expo 2020. While the Vespa Elettrica has been in production in Europe for some time now, it's not the Elettrica which will likely be launched in India. According to Piaggio India CEO and Managing Director Diego Graffi, for India, the Italian brand will develop a new electric scooter, which will be made specifically for the Indian market, as the electric two-wheeler space begins to expand. But it won't be just an electric scooter, and Piaggio is exploring the development of multiple platforms in the electric vehicle space.
"With the growing changes in the electric two-wheeler ecosystem, Piaggio India is in the process of introducing innovative electric mobility solutions in India keeping the local consumer in mind. We are exploring multiple platforms for designing electric mobility solutions for India," said Graffi.
The Vespa Elettrica has a brushless DC motor with 4kW peak power (around 5.4 bhp) and develops 200 Nm of peak torque. The battery is a 4.2 kWh lithium ion unit, with a claimed range of 100 km in Eco mode, and 70 km range in Power mode. The Elettrica's maximum speed is rated at 70 kmph in Power mode, and 45 kmph in Eco mode. The Vespa Elettrica offers a long list of features, including Bluetooth connectivity with the Vespa Connectivity mobile app, and a full digital instrument cluster with TFT display. The speedometer also offers call and message display.
Piaggio India unveiled a brand new scooter, the Aprilia SXR 160, at the Auto Expo 2020. Along with the new maxi scooter, Piaggio India also showcased a Limited Edition Vespa Racing Series, along with the facelifted 2020 Vespa RED, Vespa SXL and Vespa VXL models, along with the Aprilia SR 160 and Aprilia SR 125 with disc brakes. All these models will be launched in the second quarter of 2020. Going by the popularity of the Aprilia range of scooters in India, it won't be surprising if Piaggio India decides to launch the electric vehicles under the Aprilia brand.
