Audi won't be doing an all-electric version of its flagship A8 sedan when the next generation arrives, a recent report states. Audi development chief Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler was quoted by Automotive News Europe stating that the company will instead work on expanding the driving range on the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the luxury saloon to beyond the current 47 km range. The development is in contrast to Audi's previous statement that an electric A8 was under consideration. The current generation A8 was introduced globally in 2018.

At the 2019 Audi Annual General Meeting, Audi AG Chairman of the Board of Management, Bram Schot had said, "The next generation of the Audi A8 might well be all-electric. That has not been decided yet, but I can well imagine it. We are thinking about revolutionising the top-end class with a completely new concept for the A8."

Furthermore, Schot had also said that the automaker was considering electrifying the next generation Audi TT and the Audi R8 as well. However, with plans being reconsidered for the electric A8, the electrified TT and R8 could be delayed as well. In contrast, compatriots Mercedes-Benz and BMW have announced electric variants of the next-generation S-Class and the 7 Series respectively. Mercedes also showcased the EQS concept last year that previews the electric S-Class. Audi is expected to shift focus towards crossovers in its electric mobility line-up. The company is looking at the EV utility vehicle segment as a more promising space that will grow faster than premium sedans.

At present, the Audi A8 60 TFSI is the plug-in hybrid version on sale from the manufacturer. The luxury sedan uses the 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine that produces 454 bhp and 700 Nm of peak torque. The new generation Audi A8 was launched in India earlier this year after a long wait and is priced at Rs. 1.56 crore (ex-showroom) for the long wheelbase version. India gets the petrol-only version of the sedan and is powered by the 3.0-litre motor that develops 336 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque.

The new A8 L is loaded to the gills in terms of features and comes with Matrix LED headlights and bold taillamps with OLED technology, new and improved infotainment system and Virtual Cockpit, dual screens for the centre console, and a foot massage function for the rear seats.
